KATHY BRENTON & GERRY MORELLIi
RECEIVE JENKINS MEMORIAL AWARD
GRUMMAN DEVELOPMENT
DISCUSSED AT LUNCHEON
The New York State Honorary
Life Membership, also referred to
as The Jenkins Memorial Award,
is given to an individual in recognition
of distinguished service to
children. It serves to honor a
special person, who for years, has
supported PTA or served the.
children in the community. It is
given with gratitude and expresses
appreciation for caring about
children.
This year, it was a pleasure and
privilege to honor two people who
are most worthy of this esteemed-citation.
These women are the*
personification of the significance-and
spirit of this award.
Kathy Brenton was honored for
her years of service to PTA as a
member and president. She
represented the PTA. at Town
(Meetings, School Board Meetings,
and reported back all pertinent
information. Kathy has been ».
leader of two childrens' 4-H Clubs
as well as a teen club. She assisted
in many youth programs thru
Cooperative Extension.with an
emphasis on community service.
She is involved in teaching children
how to speak at a public
presentation, always giving the
children the confidence they
needed. She is also a member of
the Bethpage School District
Committee of Special Education
for Preschool and Elementary Age
Children. Kathy has the financial
wizardry of a Donald Trump, the
promotion techniques of a Donald
King, and sometimes had to play
the part of a Donald Duck. With
all that, Kathy still found time to
help organize the St. Patrick's
Parade for the town. Kathy is a
very dedicated parent and caring
person. She is an asset to our
community.
Amblyopia is a weakness of
vision often referred to as lazy eye.
If detected at early ages, this
condition is readily correctable. For
years, Gerry Morelli has worked
on and chaired the Amblyopia
Committee. Through her efforts,
.annual screenings were held at
various elementary schools in
Bethpage where children were
tested for Amblyopia starting at
the age of three. Gerry received
her training from the Helen Keller
Institute. This year Gerry returned
to our elementary schools, even
though her children have moved
up, to train the entire district in the
proper procedures to screen
children for Amblyopia. Since the
Helen Keller Institute lost its
funding due to tax cuts, we are
deeply grateful that Gerry found
the time to train others. We are
very proud of all her hard work and
give her a big thanks from all the
children whose condition was
detected thru the efforts of her
committee.
Grumman Development — Taking advantage of a recent visit of State
Economic Development Commissioner Charles Gargano with
Republican officials, Bethpage businessman Edward P. Mangano,
candidate for the new county legislature, hosted Kenneth Berchtold,

JANE BROOKS SALUTED FOR SERVICE
Kathy Brenton (L) presenting Jane Brooks with award.
PTA is the largest volunteer
organization working exclusively
to improve the education, health,
safety and well-being of all children
and youth. Through PTA,
Parents, Teachers, Administrators
and others work for quality education
and a true partnership
between home and school.
Every now and then you come
across someone who contributes
above and beyond their share.
Jane Brooks is an exceptional
woman who over many, many
years has given of herself to make
this a better place for all our
children. She is warmhearted,
modest, reputable, honest, efficient
and effective. She is
extremely devoted, very sincere
and always fair.
Jane's enthusiasm is contagious.
When you get involved
working on a committee with Jane,
it never seemed like work. Jane
