VOL 28 NO. 11 MARCH 17-23, 1995 40 CENTS
A FLAG WAVES ABOVE AN
OCEAN OF BLUE
A Final Tribute and Farewell To Lt. Raymond Schiebel
Bethpage was deeply saddened
by the loss of Lt. Raymond
Schiebel, a New York City Fireman
and long time Bethpage
resident. On Saturday, March 11
the streets of Bethpage turned
to an ocean of blue as thousands
of fireman from various towns as
well as from New York City came
to pay a final tribute to their
comrade. Ray Schiebel lost his
life in the line of duty on March
7 after fighting a fire in a brown-stone
on March 5. Those who
knew Ray viewed him not only
as a dedicated fireman but also
as a loving and committed husband,
father and friend. Both he
and his wife were very involved
in the PTA as well as various
other organizations and acti-vites.
Ray did not merely live in
Bethpage; he became a part of
it as did his wife and three
children.
I have often said that it takes
a special person to be a fireman.
Someone who without question
will put his life on the line for
one he has never met. It takes
a special person to enter a
burning building and fight an
enemy as strong as fire. Ray
Schiebel was that kind of person
and he was special as a fire
fighter, husband and father. To
the Schiebel family we all offer
our sincere and heartfelt condolences.
We also pray that each
day will ease their pain with the
knowledge that Ray was so
deeply loved and admired and
that his memory will live on
forever in all our hearts and
thoughts. This prayer is dedicated
to the memory of Ray
Schiebel as well as all fireman
who each day give so much of
themselves for others.
