Bethpage Water District Urges PataKi
To Restore Funding for
Drinking Water Regulation
William Ellinger, Commissioner
of Bethpage Water District today
urged New York Governor George
Pataki to include the funding for
drinking water regulation that was
excluded from the state budget
released on February 1.
The funding, which totals
approximately $3.6 million, is
required by the state health
department to comply with
increased federal drinking water
standards. The state health
department, in conjunction with
the Nassau and Suffolk county
health departments, currently
provide the most comprehensive
drinking water regulation in the
nation, said Mr. Ellinger.'
If the money is not forthcoming,
then the state may be forced to
surrender certain water supply
regulatory functions to the federal
Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA), said Ellinger.
"The EPA in Washington is an
overworked, understaffed bureaucracy
that would not be able to
adequately handle the job of local
drinking water regulation," said
William Ellinger. "We are hopeful
that the new administration in
Albany recognizes this fact and
moves swiftly to include the funding
in the new budget. It is money
well spent."
He added that the Bethpage
Water District is supporting the
Long Island Water Conference's
lobbying effort on this issue.
The Long Island Water Conference,
established in 1951, consists
of water supply professionals
dedicated to providing and maintaining
an adequate and safe water
supply system. Conference
members include the Island's
major purveyors of public drinking
water; consulting engineers; attorneys;
manufacturers and contractors
related to water supply; and
officials of governmental regulatory
agencies.

at the sixth annual indoor

the sixth consecutive year thousands
of children and adults
admired this three day extravaganza
Thanksgiving weekend
featuring hundreds of designer
decorated trees, wreaths and
centerpieces, plus a village of-chocolate
and gingerbread
