Bethpage hosts successful volleyball tourney for Silver; he becomes robbery victim three days later
Jason at the April 15 Tournament
On April 15 Bethpage residents
came out in force to participate in
the Sixth Annual Jason. Silver
Volleyball Tournament which
raises funds to help Jason, a
Bethpage High School student
who was struck down by a car in
1987. Local organizations, residents
and school groups come
together to slam dunk the volleyball
for a young man who today
remains in a coma. This event was
organized by Anne Marie Marrone
who gives tirelessly supervising
the game, raffles, and all other
aspects of this fund-raiser. Terry
Sullivan also proved to be instrumental
in getting this year's game
off the ground.
The game began with the Star
Spangled Banner and also a reading
of a poem written by Anne
Marrone about Jason which
brough a tear to virtually every
eye. Next Mr. Silver spoke to the
crowd and told of the difficulties
and enormous expense in getting
treatment for Jason. He told of
how he, his wife and his family are
devoted to getting Jason the best
treatment for his injuries and hope
that someday they will have Jason
as he once was. The game was
extremely successful, raising over
$4000. I congratulate everyone
involved in the event as well as the
courage of the Silver family. The
unity and love that they show is
far more moving than perhaps
they will ever know. It Is in the eyes
of this family that everyone can
see the best of human spirit,
compassion and devotion. IT IS
WHAT I MUST REPORT NEXT
THAT EXEMPLIFIES THE ABSOLUTE
WORST!
On April 18, at about 11:30 am
Jason's home care nurse answered
the door at the Silver residence
and was confronted by a
black male, approximately 20
years old, 6 ft. tall who forced his
way into the house along with two
other male suspects. The second
suspect was described as a male
Hispanic approximately 17 years
old and there is no description of
the third suspect. The male produced
a knife and punched the
nurse in the face causing a laceration.
He then tied her up and
put her face down on the floor.
While one of the suspects stayed
with the nurse the other two
proceeded to ransack the home.
The suspects fled with an undetermined
amount of property. At
2:30 p.m. a second home care
nurse came to Jason's home and
released the victim. There was no
report of injury to Jason during the
robbery although he Is being
monitored for any emotional
effects this trauma could have
caused.
I can not even put Into words
how disgusting this crime is. What
type of person or persons would
victimize a family that has already
been victimized. The Eighth Pre-

AMERICAN LEGION
GETS NEW LOOK
Thanks to local artist John Sacchitello
A few weeks ago the Tribune
told you the story of a local artist
and Bethpage High School graduate,
John Sacchitello, who was
embarking on an enormous project
incorporating both his concern
for environmental preservation
of whale life as well as his
talent and appreciation for the
arts. It was John's desire to
embark on his venture right here
