Bethpage Ultramarathon
A Huge Success!
Bethpage High School was once
again the host of the Long Island
12 Hour Ultramarathon Challenge,
and this year's 10th anniversary of
the event, held last Saturday May
7, was nothing short of
spectacular.
Nobuaki Koyago of New York
City won the event by logging 841/2
miles, 362 feet, an event record as
well as an all time Long Island
record for 12 hours. The winner
rounded the VA mile track with
precision and consistency, stringing
together 8 minute miles even
in the final hours of the Run. First
timer Kathy Forster won the women's
division 521/2 miles, 1143 feet,
with new mom Kate Quaranto
(who won the women's division in
1992) second with 49% miles, 282
feet.
Also among the finishers was
Willie Rios, who logged 47VA miles
at age 77.
The Run was conducted by the

Mural Dedicated To
Community of Bethpage
On Saturday May 14, Artist John Sacchitello along with the Central

American Legion Unit 86 for donating their building as well as to the
Chamber of Commerce and Councilman Lenny Kunzig for their
support. ,*• (Continued on Page 5)
Mrs. Q. Roosevelt and
Buddy Mazzara Discuss
D-Day Anniversary
By Linda Mangano
When asked to become involved
in the 50th Anniversary of D-Day
on June 5, needless to say I was
elated. Buddy Mazzara, a man who
needs no introduction in Bethpage,
questioned me as to my
interest in becoming the Chairperson
of Public Relations and it was
an assignment that I accepted with
pride and happiness. This remembrance
is very important to so
many people. Not only Veterans
but family members who
remember D-Day with a multitude

Vietnam Memorial in Bethpage
Plans are under way for the erection of a memorial to house the
name tracings of the Bethpage boys who gave their lives in the Vietnam
fighting. These tracings were taken from the Vietnam Memorial Wall
in Washington D.C. as a project of the 1993 Bethpage High School
Band under the direction of their Band Director, Frederick Cohen,
on their trip to D.C.
The tracings were presented to Kay Mazzie, Secretary of the
Bethpage Memorial Committee during the annual Memorial Day
Service at the Bethpage Community Park last year. The Bethpage
Memorial Committee gave it's approval for the erection of the Memorial
at a special meeting in February 1994. The Memorial will be dedicated
at the Community Park Service following the annual Memorial Day
Parade on Monday, May 30th.
Memorial Day is a Community Day and alt organizations of the
Community of Bethpage are invited to participate in remembrance
of the men who have given their lives for their country that we may
remain a free nation - free to worship God as we wish, work as and
where we wish and speak our thoughts as we wish. Won't you join
with us in our efforts for our day of rememberance - LEST WE FORGET.
While meetings have been held in March and April, not all
organizations have advised the Committee of their intention to parade
or, if not parading, whether they wish to place a wreath. The final
meeting of the Committee before the parade will be Wednesday, May
25th at the American Legion Hall at 8 p.m.
