At our annual Holiday Party at
the Bethpage Public Library, Mary
Kuhlke took us back in time to the
year 1862 when Lincoln was president
and America was engaged
in the Civil War. Mary's presentation
made us aware of the many
hardships endured by the soldiers
on both sides, North and South,
during Christmas lime. Through,

LOOKING BACK AT
THE YEAR THAT WAS
By Linda Mangano
One can hardly believe that we bid farewell to 1993 ana are now
full swing Into '94. It seems as though the years fly by faster and
faster. And although 1993 did seem to wiz by, it was a year with many
milestones and events ...memories that will linger on well into 1994
and far longer.
January 1993 began with a very memorable moment as we watched
BUI Clinton, former Arkansas governor take the oath of office as the
President of the United States. And while BUI Clinton was building
his new administration and agenda as the Chief of Staff, Czechoslovakia
broke its union of 75 years and split into two states. Locally, Long
Island had the spot light firmly shining in its direction as the Amy
Fisher-Joey Buttafuoco story unraveled in 3 made for TV movies...as
if one wouidnthave been enough. And just when that heat has cooled
a little girl named Katie Beers was found alive in a bunker seven feet
below ground in the home of John Esposito. Two weeks later Esposito
was charged with child abuse and kidnapping. We all began licking
a new stamp...the king of stamps so to speak as Elvis made his debut
as the newest additon to our letters. Speaking of new additons, David
Letterman another king of late night, that is, became an addition to
CBS with a reported contract of over 40 million dollars.
Back on capital hill Clinton lifts the gag rule against abortion and
Zoe Baird, senate confirmee has serious babysitting problems. Ross
Perot forms United We Stand, which was said to be the new watchdog
group in the United States and boy did we watch as Cincinnati Reds
owner, Marge Schott was suspended from major league baseball and
fined over $20,000 for racial remarks.
February marked the selection of Janet Reno as President Clinton's
choice for attorney general and Judge Ruth Bader Glnsburg to the
Supreme Court. Although Clinton was busy nominating, he had time
to unveil his economic plan and budget proposal. In the entertainment
world Eric Clapton was awarded three Grammy's for his song Tears
from Heaven while horror and many tears were shed on February 26
as the World Trade Center was heavily damaged and six lives lost
in an afternoon explosion which was traced to a car bomb allegedly
planted by Muslims. Cupid never seemed to cast any arrows this month.
March began on another violent note as David Gunn, a Florldian
doctor who perfromed abortions, was shot down by an anti-abortion
activist. Boris Yeltsin's power was shot down by Russian legislators
votes. Steve Olin was killed in a speedboat accident as Cleveland Indian
fans mourned and Kim Bassinger was certainly mourning as she was
sued and forced to pay over $9 million dollars for backing out of an
oral agreement to appear in the movie Boxing Helena. While Bassinger
was counting her pennies Clint Eastwood was counting his blessings
as he received an Oscar for the Unforgiven.
April showers bring May flowers but also brought with it a new fashion
statement for brownies as after 66 years the tradition uniform is nixed
