BETHPAGE FIRE DEPARTMENTS
PROMPT RESPONSE SAVES BETH DRUGS
Members of the Bethpage Fire Department responded to the early
morning call at Beth Drugs in record time and contained and
extinguished what could have been a catastrophic fire.
The holidays are a time when
Bethpage as well as other communities'
local merchants try to
make up for what has been a
sluggish economy. Many in fact
make more money during the
holiday months than perhaps
during the entire year. Last week,
the hopes of a profitable holiday
season went up in smoke for one
of Bethpages favorite local shops,
Beth Drugs.
On Tuesday, November 29,
1994, at 10:26AM, the Bethpage
Fire Department received a report
of a fire at Beth Drugs located at
340 Broadway. Upon arrival firefighters
found a smoke condition
in the store and upon further
investigation determined that
there was a fire involving the wood
structural members above the
ceiling.
First arriving firefighting units
under the command of Captain
William J. Zura quickly pulled
down the ceiling to expose and
extinguish the fire. The fire was
brought under control within Fifteen
minutes and damage was
confined to Beth Drugs. There
were no injuries.
The fire had been burning for
sometime, undetected, in the area
above the ceiling. If this had
occurred at a time when the store
was unoccupied, at 3AM for example,
the results could have been
very different. The fire was caused
by a defective light fixture ballast.
One problem that firefighters
had encountered upon theirarrival
was that the two key fire hydrants
that they used, were blocked by
illegally parked cars.
The Levittown Fire Department
was called to the scene for mutual
aid in which Ladder Company 6
responded.
Thank goodness the speedy
response of the BFD insured that
there were no injuries and also that
damage was kept to a minimum.
Unfortunately the fire was

Broadway facade to examine the roof and vent smoke from Beth Drugs.
The ceiling of Beth Drugs was damaged due to a faulty ballast which
caused the fire. Firefighters did as neat a job as could be done, although
unfortunately the entire inventory of Hallmark greeting cards were
destroyed.
