The Ninth Annual Awards
Dinner of the Bethpage
Association of Midget Football
drew a large crowd last Thursday
evening as nearly five-hundred
persons gathered to pay tribute to
the young Panther football stars
of the past season. The featured
guest of the evening was New
York Jet rookie Lou Piccone of
Mineola who was a huge success
as he described "the fight of the
small man to make his way into
pro football." Piccone, at 5-feet 9-
inches and 175 pounds, is one of
the smallest men in the National
Football League but he returned
punts and kickoffs for over 840
yards in the 1974 season, one of
the highest figures in the league.
And he priced himself in not
having a single fumble.
BAMFO President Chuck
Johnson handled the Master of
Ceremonies job as he introduced
the various other dais guests of
the night. These included
Assemblyman Lew Yevoli of Old
Bethpage, Town Councilman Sal
Mosca, Bethpage Football Coach
Howie Vogts, Bethpage Tribune
Publisher Florence Cullem,
President of the Ladies Auxiliary
Beryl Darnulc, Cheerleaders
Coordinator Sandy Walakovits
and BAMFO Team Coordinator
Bill La Salla.
Assemblyman Yevoli
presented New York State
Certificates of Merit to Panther
Founders Ben Zuk and Dick
Medford and Councilman Mosca
gave a proclamation on behalf of
the Town Board to the Panther
organization for its many years
of service to youth.
Coach Vogts spoke to the 150
youngsters and their parents and
friends and extolled the
Association for helping develop
outstanding talent for the
Bethpage High School in recent
years. It also marked the first
year for the "Cub Division" of
Panther play which includes boys
8 and 9 years old who have
developed a fast-moving intramural
style of play.
Special note was taken of the
Panther Pee Wees who won the
Division Two LIMFOL Championship
for . the second consecutive
