Consumer Deputies March Again Nassau County History Comes To Life
HAZARDOUS TOYS. County Executive Ralph G. Caso discusses toy
safety program with Consumer Affairs Commissioner James E.
Picken and volunteer Consumer Deputy April Alexander of C. W.
Post College.
To make certain that no
hazardous toys are offered for
sale in Nassau this Christmas
season, the Office of Consumer
Affairs has recruited and trained
a group of volunteer "Consumer
deputies" to check toy department
shelves, County Executive
Ralph G. Caso announced today.
"We want people to feel secure
that the toys they buy will not
harm the children they love,"
said Caso.
The deputies, who are members
of the Academy of
Marketing Science at C.W. Post
College, will carry with them the
list of 1,500 unsafe toys.which the-
U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission has banned.
"If a deputy finds any of the
items on the list," said Consumer
Affairs Commissioner James E.
Picken, "he will immediately
report it on the Toy Safety Hot
Line and investigators will move
in."
The deputies have been trained
to recognize such hazards as
sharp edges or points that could
cut or pierce a child's skin, tiny
parts that could break off and be
swallowed, loud noises that could
damage hearing, propelled objects
that could injure, or electric
toys that could shock or burn.
Hazardous toys that are not now
on the list will also be reported.
"All toy retailers in the county
have been informed that the
consumer deputies are coming,"
Picken said, "and we expect full
cooperation. We all have a
common aim."
This is the second year that the
toy deputy program is under
way, according to Picken. In
1973, relatively few hazardous
toys were found on the shelves-a
drastic change from the situation
in 1971 when the County
Executive was impelled to call
for strong Federal protection.
Now, with the Consumer Product
Safety commission as well as
State and local agencies on the
job, the public has less to fear, he
said.
"But," said Caso, "even one
toy-related injury is one too
many."
Anyone who wishes to volunteer
to be a consumer deputy in
Nassau County, to work between
now and Christmas, is invited to
call the Office of Consumer Affairs
at 535-3284.
SYOSSET, N.Y. December 5,
1974 - A major history of Nassau
County, which traces the area's
tremendous growth and history
since its formation in 1899, has
been published by the non-profit
Friends of the Nassau County
Museum organization.
Authored by Nassau County
Museum Director Edward J.
Smits, the 320-page history, titled
"Nassau - Suburbia, U.S.A.,"
was recently printed and is
currently being distributed by
Doubleday & Co., Inc., Garden
City, N.Y. The important work,
published during Nassau
County's 75th anniversary
celebration, features over 200
carefully-selected historic and
contemporary photographs and
prints of Nassau County places,
people and events which
graphically record the progress
and problems of a contemporary
suburban area.
"Nassau - Suburbia, U.S.A."
explores the suburban movement
of the twentieth century and the
changes in Nassau County which
were caused by a population
growth from 55,000 to almost
1,500,000 since its creation in 1899.
The book's eight chapters, titled
"Rural Queens County,"
"Changes in Government,"
"Aviation on the Hempstead
Plains," "The Roaring Twenties,"
"The Sunrise Homeland,"
"Suburbia Triumphant," "A
Maturing Suburb" and
"Governmental Reation" tell the
fascinating story of Nassau's
development during, three-quarters
of a century.
The events that helped shape
the county's future ~ including
rum running during prohibition,
KKK intolerance and the complexity
of governing and
providing schools for an exploding
population, are all
covered in this fascinating
Be Careful
Civic Group Cites Victory On 0TB Plan In Plainview
Plainview and Syosset
residents can rest easy on at least
one score - plans for a Nassau
County Off Track Betting Parlor
in the Plainview Syosset
Shopping Center on South Oyster
Bay Road have been cancelled.
Local civic groups,
spearheaded by the Greater
P l a i n v i ew Community
Association, had urged OTB to
reconsider its plans, on the basis
that a neighborhood shopping
plaza such as the South Oyster
Bay Road site was not an appropriate
spot lor an OTB outlet.
A delegation of local community
leaders, led by GPCA President
Paul Eisenstein, met with OTB
Vice President James Nagourney
on Monday, December 2 to voice
their objections to the planned
OTB outlet, and GPCA Town
Affairs Chairwoman Carole Fish-man
repeated those objections at
the December 3 Oyster Bay Town
Board Meeting.
The net result - OTB advised on
December 4 that it has cancelled
its plans for the Plain-view
Syosset site and will now
'concentrate on heavily commercial
and major arteries in the
County."
The Community Association
was quick to applaud OTB's
cancellation move. "I'm quite
pleased that we were able to
convince the OTB people to look
elsewhere," observed GPCA
President Eisenstein. "A neighborhood
shopping plaza just isn't
the right place lor a betting
parlor."
"POWELL FARM LANE, OLD BETHPAGE IN THE
LATE 1800s." - One of numerous historic photos which
appear in "Nassau - Suburbia, U.S.A."
drama. And the individuals who
played a part in making it all
happen, whether they be
Theodore Roosevelt, the Duke of
Wales or Robert Moses, are there
too.
During a current era when a
"sense of community" seems to
be on the decline, "Nassau -
Suburbia, U.S.A." is an outstanding
contribution to all
Nassau County and metropolitan
New York residents who continue
to feel and maintain "roots" in
their chosen community. The
book is also a valuable reference
work for writers, researchers
and students, and was published
by the Friends organization as
part of its publications program.
Other hardcover Nassau County
historical reference works are
planned.
"Nassau - Suburbia, U.S.A." is
available in a regular edition
format for $12.95 or a special
numbered, slip-case edition
priced at $15.95. Copies can be
obtained at regular book stores
and all Friends Gift Shops
located at Nassau County
Museum facilities including the
Old Bethpage village restoration
in Old Bethpage and the
Historical Museum at
Eisenhower Park in East
Meadow. All profits and royalties
will be used by the Friends to
assist museum programs.
Although auto thefts in Nassau
County are down some 16 percent
from 1973, Police Commissioner
Louis J. Frank, has warned
motorists that they stand a
greater chance of having their
cars stolen if they leave them in
free parking lots.
Frank revealed today the
results of a survey recently
conducted by the department in
cooperation with the Federal
Bureau of Investigation which
show that 63 percent of cars
stolen during daylight hours are
taken from such free parking
areas as shopping centers.
During the first 10 months ot
1974 there were 4,380 cars stolen
in the county, 600 less than during
the same period last year, or a
drop of 16 percent.
Other data disclosed shows that
most stolen cars are more than
five years old; most car thieves
are under 18 years of age and,
oddly enough, more than half the
cars stolen from such areas as
shopping centers, were locked at
the time of the theft.
